ELA KIZHI (POULTICE WITH HERBAL LEAVES)

Swedana therapies (kizhi treatments) also known as Pinda swedam or Pottali swedam is a medicated fomentation therapy wherein medicated leaves along with herbal powders are tied in pottali (cloth bags) & the body is massaged with these; the application of pressure varies according to the nature of ailment and area affected. This reduces the inflammation in the affected area thereby reducing muscle and joint pains.  Application of the heat and there by inducing perspiration using heated pack of specific Vataharaherbal leaves like: Datura, Eranda, Arka and Nirgundi known as Patra Pottali Swedam. The word Patra’means ‘leaves of medicinal plants’ and ‘Pinda ‘means a ‘Bolus. Patra Pottali is derived from two words: Patra= Leaves + Pottali= Bundle. This Swedam is considered under the category of Snigdha Swedam and Ushma Swedam.
